Notes for John Beck |
As told to Stephen Slaton after Elmo Slaton's funeral. He moved to Baggs, Wyoming when he was very young. He saw his first movie there, it was in an old garage. The owner would move all the tools and folding chairs would be set up on the dirt floor. The screen was the back wall of the garage. He attended 1st grade in Baggs. His family moved to Rawlins, Wyoming where he went to school there until third grade. He left home at age 16 and traveled by bus to Jackson Hole, Wyoming from Rock Springs. On the way there, the bus had a flat tire and the bus driver wasn't thrilled to change the tire so he offered to help. Together he and the bus driver got the tire changed. After arriving in Jackson, the bus driver called someone and within the hour John had a job working on a ranch. He would go back to Jackson during the summers to do ranch work, but thought the winters were too cold.
John worked as a heavy equipment operator and told a story of a five-mile conveyor belt used to move the bottom of the river they were cleaning up.
Both John and Mildred were born in Missouri. They were in Jackson Hole, Wyoming during the same period of time. But they didn't meet until they were both in southern California. |
