| Story of Jarvis Reeves recalls Early Days of Pioneer Near Here The funeral of Jarvis Reeves, well known farmer, whose death was recorded in last week's paper, was held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Williamson Funeral home, with Rev. Charles FirzHenry officiating. Mrs. Paul R. Laird and Merle Wilmoth and and Mrs. George Smith was the accompanist. Interment was in Sugar Creek Chapel cemetery. Roy Johnson, Past Noble Grand of the Odd Fellows in the State of Illinois and head of the I.O.O.F. Orphans Home at Lincoln, gave an address at the service. Mr. Reeves's father and brothers had started from Ohio to California in 1849, but the father became ill on the way at West Point, Indiana and during the halt there all of the horses of the party died with what was called the "milk-sick" a disease engendered by an Indiana weed which affected both stock and human beings, it being the illness to which was attributed the death of Nancy Hanks Lincoln, mother of Abraham Lincoln, thiry years earlier. Leaving the rest of his father's family in Indiana, young Jarvis pushed on to Iroquois county, Illinois. He worked for a time for Geo. Roberds once a well known man hearabouts. He began farming for himself on what was known as the Sam Rush place 5 or 6 miles northwest of Milford. He participated in the barn raisings so common in that day and the present oakframe barn on what is today known as the Calkin place is one of those which he helped to erect in 1869. In 1871 he contrated himself and his teams in the building of the C and E I railroad through this region and often stated that he dumped the first scraper of earth on the grade near Hoopeston. He also helped in the double tracking of the raod in 1884. He attended the first county fair at Watseka in 1868 and over 60 years later he atteded the fair's last exhibition in 1929. As a boy 9 years old he saw Abraham Lincolm at West Point on the train that took Lincoln to Washington, D.C. to be inaugurated president, and four years later he saw the train which bore the body of the martyred president to its last resting place. Mr. Reeves was a member of the Odd Fellows order and was one of the oldest members in the state of Illinois. In 1925 the order granted him the emblem of one who had then been a member for fifty years so that at the time of his death he had been a member nearly 62 years. He was a type of rugged pioneer who espoused the things that were deemed essential and his neighbors and acquaintances have accorded him the respect and confidence due to his long years, his arduous toil and the experiences through which he came and the contributions he and his type have made to the foundation of the life of this later day. Jarvis Reeves was born near West Point in Tippecanoe county, Indiana, on March 8, 1952 and passed away August 10, 1937 aged 85 years 5 mo. and 2 days. When he was 16 years old he came to the vicinity of Milford where he later married Ivy Ellander Harness, December 4, 1870. From the beginning they lived on the farm in this county. In the year 1880 he bought the place where he afterward resided until he passed away. To this union eight children were born, three passing away before him: Minnie Phebe Reeves, January 1875, James Henry Reeves, January 1881, George Blaine Reeves, June 1904. Those living are Charles W. Reeves, Forest C. Reeves, Milford, Ill.; Wm Reeves, Ladoga, Indiana, Jesse Van Reeses, Gotherburg, Nebraska, Nora May Jenkins, Gotherburg, Nebraska; also eight grandchildren, on great-grandchild, one sister, Mrs. Rebecca Harness of Milford, one brother William Reeves of Voco, Utah besides many other relatives and a host of friends. His wife passed away in May 1914. March 8, 1920 he was married to Mrs. Martha Endsley of Wellington, Ill., who survives him. The pall bearers, all Odd Fellows, Winfield Scott, Homer Hix, August Anderson, Del LaRoche, Oscar Sundberg and K. Cohen.
